By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

“Wolves at the Threshold”

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
