By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
