They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
