Chapter 4: What the River Kept
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
