Chapter 15: Ashes on the Wind
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
“Ashes on the Wind”
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. She had never seen a spell apologise before. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
