Chapter 651: Ashes on the Wind
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
“Ashes on the Wind”
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
