Chapter 665: Below the Seventh Gate
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
“Below the Seventh Gate”
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
