They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
