It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

“Where the Old Ones Sleep”

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
