Chapter 810: A Debt Paid in Silence
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
