They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
