Chapter 201: Everything the Fire Left
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

“Everything the Fire Left”
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
