The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
