Chapter 233: Below the Seventh Gate
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

“Below the Seventh Gate”
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
