Chapter 234: A Debt Paid in Silence

The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
