Chapter 237: Everything the Fire Left
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
