Chapter 238: The Second Awakening
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
