Chapter 239: No Crown Without Blood
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

“No Crown Without Blood”
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
