By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. She had never seen a spell apologise before. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
