The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

“The Weight of a Name”

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
