By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. She had never seen a spell apologise before. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

“What the River Kept”

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
