The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

“Below the Seventh Gate”

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
