By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
