Chapter 403: The Long Road North
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
