They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
