Chapter 463: The Long Road North
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
