They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

“No Crown Without Blood”

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
