Chapter 468: Where the Old Ones Sleep
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
“Where the Old Ones Sleep”
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
