Chapter 515: No Crown Without Blood
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. “No Crown Without Blood”
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
