By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

“Where the Old Ones Sleep”

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
