The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had never seen a spell apologise before. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
