Chapter 520: What the River Kept
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
