Chapter 521: Below the Seventh Gate
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. She had never seen a spell apologise before. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
