It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
