Chapter 537: Everything the Fire Left
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
