Chapter 538: The Second Awakening
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
