Chapter 539: No Crown Without Blood
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
“No Crown Without Blood”
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
