The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

That was the part that frightened him. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
