It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

“What the River Kept”

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
