Chapter 581: Below the Seventh Gate
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
“Below the Seventh Gate”
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
