It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

“Below the Seventh Gate”

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
