Chapter 594: A Debt Paid in Silence
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
“A Debt Paid in Silence”
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
