They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
