Chapter 709: A Kingdom Remembered
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
