The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

“The Weight of a Name”

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
