Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

“No Crown Without Blood”

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
