The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
